Steve is putting the public at the heart of public transport. He has rolled back the 1980s by taking back control of our buses, launched the country’s first publicly owned trains in a generation, made transport more affordable by capping bus fares and freezing rail tickets. He has already opened two new train stations – with a third on the way – and ensured that a Ferry Cross the Mersey is here to stay, with a brand new boat being built locally.
A growing economy
Under Steve’s leadership, our city region was the fastest-growing in the country before the pandemic struck. He helped the local economy bounce back after COVID with nearly £200m of targetted investment and has consistently fought for – and won – more and more funding from the government. Steve has supported investments in every part of the region that have helped to create 60,000 jobs and 30,000 apprenticeships and helped local people get on the housing ladder with more than 30,000 new homes.
The Uk's renewable energy coast
Steve is making sure the Liverpool City Region leads the race to net zero by developing plans for the world’s largest tidal project on the River Mersey. He has successfully lobbied for funding to convert our worst polluting industries to cleaner forms of energy and invested hundreds of millions of pounds in skills so local people can take advantage of the jobs it will bring.
A fairer place for everyone
As mayor Steve hardwired Labour values into every decision and investment. Working with our trade unions, he launched a Fair Employment Charter to drive up employment standards locally and ensured that underrepresented groups have a loud voice in decision making. This has led to innovations like the sliding step technology on the region’s new trains, which has helped to make them the most accessible in the country.
A digital powerhouse
Steve invested £30m to build LCR Connect, a 214km network of digital infrastructure that offers businesses across the Liverpool City Region access to the fastest internet speeds in the country. He also invested millions in addressing digital exclusion and training thousands of local people so they have the skills to get the jobs of the future.
