Our journey so far...

Devolution is allowing communities across the country to throw off the shackles of Westminster misrule and chart their own course.

As Labour’s mayor of the city region, Steve has helped to drive the area forward, attracting fresh investment and acting as a single, powerful voice on a national and international stage.

He has helped to create 60,000 new jobs, given 30,000 people practical skills through apprenticeships, funded training for more than 35,000 people every year, and built 30,000 homes for families to put down roots.

Transformational projects have been delivered in every borough of the region, which would not have been possible without a mayor.

But we’re only just getting started. The region has achieved so much already – but there is still work to do.

Here are just a few of those achievements…

HB2-2
Getting the region moving

Steve has overseen record levels of funding in transport, introducing the UK's first publicly-owned trains in a generation, taking back control of the region's buses, opening two new train stations and investing millions of pounds in active travel infrastructure.

Doing things differently

Steve has shown the difference Labour in power makes, offering an alternative to the callous Conservative government.

Housing First has seen more than 90% of the people it has supported sustain tenancies, and Households into Work has helped more than 3,000 long-term unemployed across the region.

Tackling the climate emergency

Building on underlying strengths in wind, solar, hydrogen and tidal energy, Steve has established the region as the UK's Renewable Energy Coast.

To date, more than £100m has been invested in improving the energy efficiency of local homes and plans are well underway for the world's largest tidal scheme.

Building a brighter future

Steve has invested to support transformative developments in every part of the region.

From Shakespeare North in Prescot and Runcorn Station Quarter in Halton, to Southport Market and Bramley Moore stadium, helping to create jobs, revitalise areas and grow the economy.

Capital of Culture

Since 2017, Steve has invested at least 1% of the Combined Authority’s budget on cultural events, including supporting Liverpool play host to Eurovision 2023, which brought in £54m to the local economy.

Alongside annual events like The Grand National and the region's Premier League and Super League teams, it truly is the UK’s cultural capital.
